A large and interesting collection of vintage c1930's horse tack / equine accessories. All relating to a Norman Dayer-Smith, personal aide to the Royal Family in the 1920's. By family repute, he was said to have 'taught Queen Elizabeth & Princess Margaret how to ride horses.' Being a general aide to the Royal Family, but later stable master at Buckingham Palace (and other Royal residences) due to his love and work with horses. The collection features various leather straps, muzzle, buckles, stirrups, a pair of Dayer-Smith's working boots and other related items, all from the stables at Buckingham Palace. Included as provenance are also; a personal photograph of Dayer Smith taken in the private gardens at Buckingham Palace (presumably accompanied by one of the Royal Alsatians), a private note on headed Prince George notepaper which reads ' HRH Prince George thanks Mr. Dayer Smith for changing the number & requests him to send the charwoman to clean up on Tuesday morning. If she cannot, then Wednesday morning, & would she send the washing too.' The note being unsigned, is presumed to have been written by someone close to Prince George, or possibly by George himself. Also included, and of military interest, is a recommendation for war duty (WWII) from Windsor Castle, presumably some time after his work with the Royal Family. On headed paper, and signed by Ulick Alexander, Keeper Of The Privy Purse. Passages including; 'Mr Dayer Smith...has been responsible for the inventories of Their majesties private effects at The Royal Lodge for some years, and, apart from these duties, has carried out other work for Their Majesties with every satisfaction.' 'Mr Dayer Smith held a commission in the last war in the Cheshire Regiment and was on the Regular Reserve of Offices until..1938.' Another recommendation from ' Rear Admiral BV Brooke ' follows. All housed within the original envelope. Finally, a reproduced photograph of Dayer Smith atop a racing horse. Framed and glazed.
A fascinating and important collection.
